A Free Summer Playwriting Program from The Motor Company

Do you like theater or really dramatic stories? Would you like to write a play? Would you like to see your play performed? If the answer is “yes”- join us this summer at Play On!

In this 7 week summer program you will:

  • Learn how to read scripts and important dramatic elements like dialogue, characters, and plot

  • Write your own 5-10 minute play, getting feedback from the group plus a 1:1 session with your playwriting teacher

  • See your script be rehearsed by a professional director and a group of actors

  • See a staged reading performance of your work at Moore Jackson Cemetery and Community Garden

Who: Play On is open to a total of 10 students ages 9-12

When: Saturdays,10am-11am

Meet Your Playwriting Teacher

Angela Santillo is a writer and artist based in New York City. She has developed curriculum and taught drama and playwriting at schools in the Bronx, Westchester County, throughout Vermont with Northern Stage, and as a volunteer teaching artist with The Possibility Project (NYC). She recently was a visiting professor at Saint Mary’s College where she taught a winter course in how to make documentary theater. Her plays have been produced around the country including productions in New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, and Asheville. Her play A Stupendous Illusion of Reality was recently a finalist for Henley Rose Playwright Competition for Women. She has an MFA in Theater from Sarah Lawrence College. www.angelasantillo.com.

Meet Your Director

Lillian Meredith is a director, teacher, and theater artist from New York City. She is the founder and Artistic Director of The Motor Company, where she produces site-responsive, free theater for public spaces around New York. She has taught at Brooklyn College, Professional Performing Arts High School, Swivel Arts Youth Camp in San Francisco, and at the West Kortright Centre in upstate New York, where she currently leads the Shakespeare in the Valley teen acting program. Professional credits include Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Clubbed Thumb, Ars Nova, and Boise Contemporary Theater. She is a former directing intern with Actors Theatre of Louisville,  and a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and the inaugural Clubbed Thumb Directing Fellowship.
